If you have to tell people you’re cool, you’re probably not

The most well-known Peter Kim in the blogosphere (he also lives in the Boston area but works at Forrester Research) just wrote a post entitled “Chasing Cool”. I’ve thought about what he’s writing about in the past, as it relates to churches.

My problem with a lot of “emergent”/postmodern churches are that they try too hard to be “cool”. They say in their bulletins and website that they’re cool, hip and different. I think if you have to convince people that you are hip or cool, it probably means you are not. The people and organizations that are truly cool are the ones who are just being themselves and don’t have to convince anyone of it. The other Peter Kim says “So stick with what you know and have a passion for - that’s what will make you cool.”

To be honest, I’ve struggled with this in the past. At times, out of my insecurity, I wanted to find a way to make myself stand out. I didn’t like being a nobody. I envied the “popular” people. I’m going through my own personal growth process of discovering the things about me that are genuinely unique and being comfortable with how God made me. I’m trying to focus on being true to myself and doing what I love, without regard to how others might perceive it.
