Would I want to work at Google?

I received an email today from a recruiter at Google asking if I was interested in working in their New York office. I don’t know if every software professional living in New York City gets contacted by Google or if they really are specifically interested in me. In any case, I would have been very excited to receive this email five months ago before I started working for my current company, but now, I can honestly say that I’m not interested at all and that it’d take a lot for me to consider giving up my current job.

One of the things I like more about my current company vs. Google is that it’s still a relatively small company. I think we’re at about 400-500 employees and the dream is to grow it into a large Google-sized company but at least for now, I still feel that, as an individual, I can make a real contribution to the company. And no, I’m not in any sort of managerial or officially influential role, so that has nothing to do with it.

Would I have that sort of opportunity working at a huge place like Google? I doubt it. I’d much rather play a meaningful role in potentially building the next Google rather than being a tiny cog in the monstrosity that is the current Google.
