The wife and I have been trying to explore different areas of New York City. The depth and diversity of personality of any of New York’s neighborhoods rivals that of whole cities.
We started out the day today by going to church in Midtown. Then took the 4/5 down to Fulton St. to check out some shoes at Century 21. We took the 4/5 back uptown to Union Square, then walked over to Kiehl’s. We walked around the East Village for a couple of hours, then met up with a friend for lunch. We walked her back to her place by going up 1st Ave through the Gramercy neighborhood. I like taking the bus, so we took the M15 up to 60th and Lex. We passed the UN building along the way. It was my first time seeing it in person from land (I’ve seen it by boat).
I never knew where the Roosevelt Island tram started from, but as we were walking to the subway stop I noticed it right there at 60th and Lex. It was a nice lazy Sunday so I convinced the wife to go on it, since we could take the Q102 from Roosevelt Island to our home in Astoria.
Roosevelt Island is weird. I don’t think I’d want to live there. There are a bunch of tall apartment buildings, some nondescript shops, and some fields. It’s very quiet and very boring, completely lacking in personality. We waited for the Q102 for a while but gave up on it, so we took the tram back to Manhattan to catch the N to Astoria.
Even though I wasn’t very impressed with Roosevelt Island, I’m glad I went. You get an amazing view of the East River and Manhattan from the tram ride. I didn’t think the tram fare would be covered by our monthly MetroCard but it was.

you’ve met Nathan & Mira yesterday @ church - they just moved to Roosevelt Island and I must say that my opinion on this weirdo-island has changed - their apt is pretty fabulous (2bd, 2bth) and right near the water & a park. commute is pretty easy too. so don’t give up on RI! i had, but now i converted :).

Roosevelt Island is good for kids. But that socialist architecture is painful to look at.
