There are people out there who are really obsessive about sound quality. I’m trying to avoid getting myself into that. :)
Apparently, the iPod and pretty much all portable music players have poor headphone output amplification, so to some degree, that becomes a limiting factor in the sound quality you get out of your iPod, regardless of how expensive your headphones are. If you really want to get the highest quality output from your iPod, you have to get a dock to line out adapter, an external headphone amp, and a good set of headphones. The dock to line out adapter bypasses the internal headphone amp circuitry. You then need the external headphone amp to process the output appropriately for headphone use.
In the end, I decided against going all out with the above setup because the whole point of having an iPod is to have a portable music listening solution. Once you start adding a special dock to line out adapter and headphone amp, it becomes much less “portable”.
Some computers’ headphone output circuitry is actually much better than that of the iPod, thus taking away the need for an additional headphone amp.
