Audio input on Apple laptop vs. ThinkPad laptop

This morning, I was testing out some audio recording on my ThinkPad and it wasn’t sounding right. I finally realized that the ThinkPad has a microphone input rather than a line-level input. This threw me off because I’ve done lots of sound recording on my PowerBook before, which has a line-level input, so I expected the ThinkPad to have the same.

I guess a mic-level input makes more sense for business people but for anyone playing around with music on the computer, it’s preferable to have a line-level input.

I’ve been holding off on getting a new Mac even though my old 12″ PowerBook G4 is over five years old now. I guess since I’ve been working so much, I haven’t had a whole lot of free time to do creative stuff on my computer anyways. Maybe I’ll treat myself when the next redesign of the Macbook comes around.

When I plug into my dell, it actually asks me what the input is…line, mic, etc…

maybe there’s a setting somewhere on the think pad?
