I don’t want to give myself too much credit but I’ve been doing this blogging/social media thing for a while… before the term “blog” even existed. It’s humbling to have people around me recognize that I really understand this stuff and how to leverage it for furthering the goals of an organization.
The company I work for now has an ad-hoc team of people tasked to think about how to best use social media to get the word out about our company and its products. It’s a really small team with a senior marketing person and some other pretty important people at the company. This past week, they invited me to join this team because word got around that this is something I’m interested in and I could probably make a significant contribution to this group.
At my last company, I was the one non-marketing, non-C level person who contributed to the company blog. At that company, I was also recognized as someone who understood this space really well and could make valuable contributions.
Even though to some of you, this post sounds like me tooting my own horn, I’m actually writing to talk about how I actually don’t think of myself as being any more knowledgeable than anyone else about blogging. Everyone from the age of 2 to 30 is blogging these days, so what could I contribute that’s different from what anyone else would say about blogging?
I won’t answer that question now (I’ll definitely have to think about how to best answer that question if I decide to become a professional independent social media strategist), but for now, I just wanted to say that I am humbled to know that people see that I know this stuff and want me to help them.

It’s hard to be objective when it comes to your own skills, but if it is any encouragement at all, I can see why you would be considered for that position, and it is no surprise to me. You were my connection to all things modern and cool. When you left the company I was left to my own devices.
